Eye On Water
The cost and availability of water are of importance in every municipality. Unfortunately, water rates continue to rise across the state. We would like to remind our customers about the steps we are putting into place that will allow you to monitor your usage as Westlake experiences another increase in their wholesale water costs. We purchase our water from the City of Fort Worth, and when they raise their base rates, we must adjust accordingly.
Staff has implemented a program that will show customers how much water they use each month. Users can then decide how and where cost-saving cuts can be made, based on their family’s needs. This program is called EyeOnWater.
In 2015, the Town began installing "smart" water meters across the community. These meters are an upgrade to the electronic drive-by meter reading system. The smart meter reading technology utilizes a stripped-down cell phone called a "cellular endpoint." Every hour, the cellular endpoint collects and stores each resident's current meter reading. Once a day, the cellular endpoint transmits the last twenty-four hourly readings to our vendor.
The Town, and more importantly individual residents and commercial customers, can see these collected readings by visiting our vendor's secure website. If a leak is detected with your water line, an alarm can be sent to you via email or text message.
A smartphone app is also available for your use in the App Store under EyeOnWater.

According to Public Works Director Jarrod Greenwood, customers can see in real-time the impact of their water usage. "When you make an adjustment, you can see the immediate change you’ve made based on the data provided by the EyeOnWater tool. You are not waiting for your bill to come in the mail. You can simply pull up the app or go online and see your total hour by hour water usage right then and there,” says Greenwood.
For example, if you notice you are using a lot of water overnight, but your family is asleep during that time - it could be a case where a large amount of water is being used for irrigation. At that point, you can talk with your landscaper about reducing the watering levels, plant native foliage that doesn’t require as much water, or even completely turning your irrigation system off during the winter months. This allows residents and all customers greater control over their consumption. It takes the guesswork out of what the total may or may not be 30 days from now when the water bill is received
One of the most useful tools EyeOnWater provides is the leak notification. If a leak is detected, an alarm notification can be sent to our water customer in an email or text message. At that point, you may consider contacting the Public Works Department so they can address the issue before the problem gets out of hand. The leak notice is probably the greatest asset for residents and businesses because they can address leaks immediately as opposed to past years when a leak was not realized for two or three months.
