The Westlake Fire-EMS Department is a certified American Red Cross training site and teaches classes to the public. The department uses the American Red Cross Hands-Only CPR and AED course.
Why Learn Hands-Only CPR?
Cardiac arrest – an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupts the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs – is a leading cause of death. Each year, more than 350,000 EMS-assessed out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. When a person has a cardiac arrest, survival depends on immediately receiving CPR from someone nearby. About 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival.
The complimentary classes are designed for ages 10 or older - minors must be accompanied by an adult. Class sizes are limited to a maximum of 12 and a minimum of 2 participants. Registration is required by calling the Fire Department at 817-490-5786 or emailing Chief John Ard at jard@westlake-tx.org.
A certificate of completion is issued to participants. Healthcare providers requiring professional certification are encouraged to contact American Red Cross for class resources.

A bleeding injury can happen anywhere. We've all seen it happen too often—on the news or in everyday life. Life-threatening bleeding can happen in people injured in serious accidents or disasters. Instead of being a witness, you can become an immediate responder because you know how to STOP THE BLEED®.
We offer STOP THE BLEED® training, which is a national awareness campaign intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.
If you would like to receive this training to prepare yourself to assist injured people following a traumatic event, please let us know and we can offer it to you with your CPR training or separately as an hour long course. Please contact Deputy Chief Kelly Clements at 817-490-5785 or email him at kclements@westlaketx.gov.
We all want our children to travel safely in cars. Installing a car seat for younger children and babies can be a challenge. At Westlake Fire–EMS Department, we have certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Car Seat technicians to assist with the proper and safe installation of car seats. There are a few things you should know before you meet with a CPS technician. This is not like getting an oil change on your car, where you leave the car and go do something else. Working with a CPS technician will be a one-on-one learning experience. When you leave, you should be confident that your child’s seat is installed correctly and feel comfortable reinstalling it on your own. This may be the most important thing you learn. You may call to schedule an appointment or stop by and request assistance with a car seat during business hours.
For more information about Child Car Seat checks and installation, please visit the CPS website.
